As I sit here writing this post, I am awed at how wonderfully the Lord provides. I stopped at Harbourview Spar in Port Shepstone on the way home to get a cooldrink because I was quite hot and thirsty. As I approached the entrance, I saw an old man with a long grey beard sitting at one of the concrete tables near the entrance with an old bag on the seat next to him, a beggar by the looks of him. He smiled at me as I approached and brushed his beard with his hand, obviously feeling some familiarity seeing my own full beard. So I smiled back politely, and walked on in to the store. I bought my drink, and did my best not to catch his eye as I left, fearing that he would harass me for money, and walked quickly to my car.
Webcam script with automatic image archival and time-lapse creation
October 8th, 2010Right, next up is a script I developed for our Church, the Norwegian Settlers Church (http://www.nsc.za.org). While our new building was going up, I wanted a webcam that updated every minute, was viewable through our Joomla site, would archive the captured images during the daytime, and would automatically create a timelapse video of the day's work. Sounds easy right ;-)
The ideal solution would have been a wireless IP camera with built-in web interface. I could then create an IFRAME in a Joomla article to display it easily and not worry about updating. The higher end ones can also automatically create the timelapse video. Funds were a bit tight, so the IP cam wasn't an option, but I did have an old Pentium 3 Dell laptop running Windows XP lying around, as well as a cheap webcam. This worked to an extent, except that the camera had a tendency to lock up, and I still had to find a way to take pictures at a predetermined interval and upload them to the server.
Integrating SecurityImages for Joomla 1.5 into K2
October 6th, 2010Ok, let's kick this off with a quick article on how I managed to get K2 to use the SecurityImage (see http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-a-security/site-security/captcha/1211) for new registrations.
First off, I had a site running Joomla! 1.5 with K2 installed for our church (http://www.nsc.za.org), but was getting quite a bit of registration and forum spamming, so wanted to implement some sort of CAPTCHA routine into the registration process. I tried installing SecurityImages but could not get it to display on the registration page, although new registrations were failing as the correct CAPTCHA was not being entered. This is because K2 "hijacks" the Joomla registration process.
